The first ( out of 21 ) piece is really a beginner's open string tonal study. Grade 1 students will be familiar with the left hand finger patterns, except possibly pattern Zero on the E string ; Grade 2 students more able to cope with the finger patterns and finger work. In addition to being a fine work for developing finger patterns, and comprehensive basic right and left hand technique, this volume provides good bowing and rhythm patterns to go with. Great tone (especially in 7 The Turtle and 11 The Lion) is always a great asset, and these pieces help develop tone as much as any other aspect of technique. They are aimed at the beginner, but a talented first year beginner or decent second year student is required to get the most out of these pieces, which seem to develop the student to professional levels. Thus I find this a difficult work, suited only to the most hard working students, who show particular ease and comfort with pattern 1 (1st and 2nd finger close together.) Students with weak 4th fingers will have a lot of (beneficial) work ahead to master these gems of the beginners' repertoire. The accompaniments have beautifully rich romantic harmony. These pieces combine scale work, finger and bowing patterns, exercises and musical interpretation in great style !
