Introduction :

Roland and Simonetta, to celebrate their wedding, are proud to announce an International Backgammon Tournament to be held in their home town Bristol, South West England. This first Bristol Wide-Open will take place on the last weekend of August 2005 (Sat.27th Aug - Mon.29th Aug). The tournament is open to all local and worldwide backgammon players, though a small warm up tournament on Friday night is (regrettably) by invitation only. The main tournament has a limitation of 120 players total. On Bank Holiday Monday there will be standalone events consisting of a last chance flight and a Team event. The tournament will feature several Texas Hold 'em and Jackpot sessions.

Gentlemen's Club, Clifton - The main Tournament

Main features :

We are introducing new ideas and formats ( at least as far as Backgammon Tournaments go in the U.K. ) inspired by our experiences at International Backgammon tournaments. Here is a list of the main features we hope to introduce, though please note that this list is still subject to revision and modification :

bulletAdded money will attract Professionals or players of International reputation. The total guaranteed added money is currently at £2,000 GBP which is about € 3,000 Euro (many thanks to all our Sponsors by the way!) with additional sponsors having expressed an interest. We will also have random draw prizes open to all who register & participate !
bulletLong matches (around 15 points) will reduce the volatility typically present in shorter 7 - 11 point matches. This will also allow English players for the first time to experience a match format almost equal in length to the Monte Carlo World Championships! There will be a progressive consolation flight too.
bulletTwo divisions ; Professional and Amateur will enable players of varying standard to participate. The final decision tends towards no formal restrictions ( based on BIBA or DBF ratings or Tournament wins ). We will, however, guarantee that you are not going to find a top Pro in the Amateur division. As a general guide the Professional division is for Snowie Advanced - Expert - World Class level, and the Amateur division is for Novice - Beginner - Intermediate level players. It is mainly up to the individual player to decide which flight he/she wishes to enter.
bulletEntry fees with 100% return have provisionally been set at £50 for the Amateur and £170 for the Professional flight. An additional £20 / £30 registration will include evening buffet and entertainment ! Even local players might stretch their pockets for an opportunity to play Professionals or even Backgammon Giants.
bulletSeeded vs. Non-Seeded in Pro flight. We have decided no to bother with this issue ; so please disregard this paragraph ! This was the idea behind it : Some non-seeded players have expressed the wish to enter the Pro flight on condition that they are guaranteed a match against a seeded player of International standard. Please voice your opinion on this (either way). Amateurs looking for a good match should probably enter the Amateur division and then enter a challenging Jackpot on the Sat. evening.
bulletIn addition, Simonetta & Roland, in order to make it possible for themselves to play each other in the final, reserve the right to enter opposite halves of the draw.
bulletMany Additional Side events will keep everyone busy and will include a Warm up tournament (held on Friday evening at the Pavilion in Bristol Zoo Gardens), a progressive Consolation flight, ad-hoc 8-player Jackpots (Amateur and Professional categories ) Stop Pots, Backgammon Consulting Doubles tournaments, Texas Hold'Em Evening Poker tournament, Finals commentary and analysis and a Backgammon Seminar by an expert (on the Sunday). There'll be a Last chance too !
bulletTexas Hold'em event : starting @ 23:00 on Saturday, £20 entry, unlimited rebuys £20, No limit Hold'em, Poker for registered Backgammon players, Table clothes for poker tables. Please let us know if you will be playing Poker so we can organise this event successfully, and so you can guarantee your place.

Tournament Rules :

We shall adopt the rules of the Danish Backgammon Federation (DBF). In particular may we draw your attention to the following Items :

bullet1.2.3 Etiquette : The directors and players are expected, in accordance with the spirit of the game, to show a high degree of courteous and considerate behaviour.
bullet1.2.4 A player's violation of Article 1.2.3 or a player's refusal to abide by the Rules of Backgammon and Tournament rules followed by the DBF may lead to his/her disqualification and expulsion from the tournament premises.
bullet1.5 The official tournament language shall be English only.
bullet1.6.1 Spectators shall remain silent while observing a match. Spectators have no right to draw attention to any misplays or comment on plays. However, spectators may report instances of cheating to the director.
bullet4.1 Premature rolls : Players conclude their turn by lifting either or both dice. If a player rolls before the opponent has completed his/her turn, the player shall only re roll if the opponent demands so.
bullet5.2 Appeals : A player may appeal the director's ruling, but this shall be done promptly while timely redress may still be obtained. A committee shall immediately resolve an appeal. The committee may overturn the director's ruling by majority decision. This exhausts the player's right to appeal.

Travel Information :

Bristol has its own International Airport called... Bristol International Airport. Other airports, might include London Stanstead from Aahrus (cheap flights with Ryan Air). Stanstead is a 3 hour trip from Bristol, but there are coaches that do the journey all the time. Heathrow is less than 2 hours, again there are loads of National Express coaches that bring people to our tournament. There are two Train Stations ; Bristol Temple Meads in the centre and Bristol Parkway in the middle of nowhere to the North West. Motorways are noisy as Bristol is just about where the M4 meets the M5. Further information to the final venue will follow a.s.a.p.

Special offer ; Martin Hemming has a free EasyJet ticket one way from London Stanstead to Copenhagen on 7:30am Tues 30th August 2005. The only expense likely will be changing the name on the ticket.

Anonymous Donations (Added prize money fund) :

If you wish to make us a Wedding gift or donation, it is possible to do this anonymously by contacting Ian Tarr, who has kindly agreed to set up an account to deal with this. The good news is that Roland & Simonetta have decided to pour these funds back into the tournament, to be divided between added prize money, and / or additional events, staff, venue, refreshments etc. We want to make this a memorable occasion ! If you wish to donate something that specifically will not go towards the tournament, but towards Simonetta & Roland's personal Wedding honeymoon fund, then Ian Tarr will also deal with this. Thanks for your donation !
