Nordic Open 2010 - a Players' Report : Updated 08.04.2010 : by Roland Herrera ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hi, readers, I am here at Nordic 2010, mostly following "Denmark vs. The Rest of the World" This event will probably witness the highest level of Backgammon ever played. (Which is why I am following it & not playing) I think this is the most exciting competition ever held. Denmark is without question the strongest nation in the World at Backgammon... At the start they were crushing the rest of the World with an 18-1/43 lead. As Carter put it "if the Rest-of-the-World can't beat them!...." Now Rest-of-the-World are fighting back! World are now trailing by only 6-points after Saturdays events. My wife and I arrived in Copenhagen with Michi (congrats. to 2009_Giant#9!) from Bristol on Monday. Although a few days early, we were lucky to be directly involved in several training matches vs. the World Team for the Final Event. Obviously, playing vs. World team with current Giants #1 #2 #7 #9 #15 etc.was hard, but highly educational for us. Bob Wachtel (Giant #10) and Elli helped! Needless to say, all matches were recorded, analysed and discussed thoroughly from beginning to end. Simonetta is playing in the Advanced (she lost money round but made deal)! & I study non stop 15 hrs for 7 days. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tips : Press REFRESH (sometimes I need to do this more than once) on your browser to load this latest txt file If you see a strange line of text (below) it's probably an exported SWE position file. Reporting finished but I am now going to re-open this file to add more Matches & Positions etc. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 05.04 21:55hrs Well the Final between Falafel and Soren is on at the moment 5-5/7 match#1. No, Soren just won match#1 It will be a bit stupid if Falafel doesn't win ! 05.04 21:30hrs The semi final between Michi and Falafel. Of course, this should have been the real final! Michi should have won over & over in Match#2 Somehow, Falafel just hung in there saving gammons, saving the match twice, and eventually taking match#2 from 5-0 down. Match #3 went to dmp. When Falafel needed a 2 to hit at the end-game he got it... it left Michi needing a 6.. but he couldn't throw it... Falafel himself said he won in a sick way... in a way he'd never won before... In match #2 Falafel muttered something like "this'll be a story to tell the grand children... that's if I ever pull this one off!" Anyway I recorded one of the best matches I have ever seen, and Michi will be back, I'm sure... He will win big time one day !! One thing is clear...you cannot skip this tournament ! It's the biggest, hardest, and best in the World...back in 2002 it was my 1st tournament abroad An eye opener and a learning experience every time I come... This time it's largely thanks to Michi's coaching... but whatever the reason.. This is the one tournament you cannot miss... The Monte-Carlo World Championship is a joke compared to this... 05.04 03:10hrs Denmark won the Final and the event by 16 points. Initial 3-ply Snowie 3ply Error Rating DK = 1.3 and World = 1.7 The final match (team consultation) started at 7-1/15 to DK to reflect their lead. Both teams made a blunder, on 3-ply (maybe not on rollouts) The rest was certainly exceptionally good play from both teams. Below ; the entire match from 1-7/15 _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 15 point This time my good friend Orlowski (Giant#27) recorded so I could enjoy the match. I still took down some positions. Also, post match discussions with Giants is something that I cannot do back home... so I still think I did the right thing... ...despite the fact everyone is upset I am not playing ! Now I am going to see the Final of DK vs. World 04.04 16:44hrs Some days are good and some not so good. So far, today is the latter. Michi & Simo both knocked out (now in the fighters' bracket) Close matches, as they were both leading half way through. I didn't even get to play mixed doubles :O(... Luckily, I was recording Michi vs.Soren (this was streamed) by hand, when Snowie got an Access Violation and packed up. Below, Michi (X) is offered a strong double by Soeren (0). Score X = 13-14/17. Would you take or drop ? I'd like to quote Paul Magriel on the Streaming chat earlier on @ 3:33 paulmagriel: "Michi you are my idol" +-------------5-----------7--8--9-10-11-12-+ | O O O O O | | X | | O O O O O | | | | O O | | | | O | | | | | | | | |BAR| | | | | | | X | | | | X X | | | | X X X X X | | O | | X X X X X | | X O | +------------------------18-17-16-15-14-13-+ 04.04 3:44hrs I'm finished for the day. This started later than 11pm Katia out-played her opponent, who played a fair game, to win 2/3 matches. Katia lost the 1st match (DK+3) Though in a commanding position, she got hit with a 6... after using up all but 5 secs. of her time on a good play with 42 to make-4. I recorded the 1st match by hand and most of the 2nd match... with a position or two in the 3rd, but I am too tired to post anything now. The games were agressively played and Katia more-or-less cubed everything she could. Error rates in match#2 were World Class. Denmark vs. The Rest-of-the-world lead only by 6 points now, thanks to Katia's efforts. Tomorrow the whole team consults to the conclusion. 1st team to win 43 points wins. (DK are 75% favourite in terms of match equity). Every time I come to Nordic I learn so much, and this time is no exception. It has been fascinating, and tomorrow should be even more so. I have an excercise book full of positions, matches & notes and almost everyone here is completely dedicated to the game. This place oozes backgammon, and with over 400 players, it's the largest and hardest tournament in the World. The majority of players, according to Matt C-G, play better than a 5 in the Championship.
